So you want a new job, or to make a career change. Once that idea’s sparked, here’s how it usually plays out in the mind:
Step 2: decide on the job you want and update your resume. LinkedIn, and cover letter
Step 3: search for the job using sites, job boards, and your network
Step 4: network, network, network – even though you probably don’t really understand quite what this entails, and likely don’t like the sound of it…
Step 5: simultaneously manage fears of not making the right choice, personal value, and rejection…
No, starting with Step 2 wasn’t an error.
These steps generally spin around in the mind and heart, often causing people to stall in any forward progress.
If this sounds like you, then you need to start with Step 1.
Step 1: Decide before you Do.
What does this mean?
It means, before you take any actions (Steps 2 and on) – make the decision that for a couple of weeks you’re going to try on being a YES to change. Don’t worry about what, or how, or when or any details – just start to shift your thoughts, your identity. From “The person who’s stuck in a dead-end job” to “The person who’s moving towards change and will figure it out”.
Again, you don’t need to do anything tactically – just try on being the woman or man who’s heading towards a career change. Open yourself up in your imagination, in your gut, your heart.
Get comfortable here, and you’ll find Steps 2 + come more easily. Or, you’ll decide to wait. Either way – it’ll be a choice, rather than a reaction.
